A message from Robert E. Murray Chairman Christopher Bise

Welcome to the Department of Mining Engineering at WVU. Ours is one of the 15 mining engineering programs in the United States. We offer both undergraduate (BS) and graduate (MS and PhD) programs.

As the oldest mining engineering program in the United States (since 1868), we have been accredited (by ABET, Inc. and its predecessors) since accreditation began in 1936.

Our alumni have been key players in the U.S. coal industry, as evidenced by individuals holding various top management positions in all major coal companies.

We are also very active in mining research and recognized worldwide, particularly in the areas of ground control/rock mechanics, longwall mining, surface subsidence, and mine health and safety. Since we are located in the center of the world's largest and richest coal field, our program is applications oriented and enjoys strong industrial support.
