Welcome to the Mining Engineering Department

The mining engineering program at West Virginia University began in 1868 when the first mine surveying course was offered. The mine surveying course is still presently being offered. The program was accredited by ABET's predecessor in 1936 when engineering programs first began the accreditation process in the United States. The accreditation of the mining engineering program has been continuously renewed without interruption since the very beginning.

The mining engineering program is housed in the Mineral Resouces Building. The departmental offices and laboratories occupy 9500 square feet. The state of the art laboratories include rock mechanics and ground control, mine ventilation, mine equipment, mine design, health and safety, longwall, coal preparation, and mineral processing.

There are 6 faculty and research staff in the mining engineering program and all of them have a PhD in their areas of expertise. In addition to regular teaching duties, all of the faculty are very active in research projects that include computer applications, coal and mineral processing, mining/milling waste management and closure, mine ventilation networking, mine management, mine health and safety, respirable dust, mine equipment, rock mechanics, and ground control.

The mining engineering program has more than 1000 living alumni throughout the United States and in many major mining countries. Graduates of the mining engineering program hold many key management positions in all major U.S. coal companies. Mining Engineering alumni from West Virginia University have played a significant role in the development and operations of the United States coal industry.

Mission Statement for Mining Engineering
