Assessment Methods

Assessment Methods

Interviews with students by
  • Visiting Committee
  • Department Chair each semester at registration
  • Department Chair exit interview with seniors

Visiting Committee interviews are conducted with groups of students each semester. At registration each student is encouraged to discuss issues with his/her advisor. Additionally, the Department Chair conducts more in-depth, individual interviews with each graduating senior. The Visiting Committee provides a written summary of their meeting with students. The Department Chair prepares a written document summarizing his interviews with students. All groups conducting interviews are provided with the assessment plan and sample questionnaires so that they are informed regarding the goals of the program.

Questionnaires

  • End of each MINE course
  • End of senior year
  • Alumni 2-3 years after graduation
  • Employers (2-3 years after beginning work)

All students are required to complete questionnaires, graduates are requested to complete questionnaires regarding the quality and quantity of their WVU educational experience, and employers are requested to complete questionnaires regarding WVU alumni in their employ.

Mine Design

The faculty teaching design maintain a library of past senior design project reports. Each oral and written report is evaluated using the outcome rubrics to identify strengths and weaknesses. If weaknesses are found, a recommendation regarding remedial action will be discussed with faculty. The best mine design project reports are submitted to national competition venues as an outside check on MINE undergraduate program.

Portfolios of student work

Portfolios of student work are maintained to demonstrate student achievement of the stated goals.
