Dr. Khair's area of research expertise is on rock mechanics, ground control, mine design, microseimics and respirable dust generation. He has been extensively involved in both experimental and analytical research which have resulted in the publication of more than hundred technical papers and he has edited proceedings of four national and international conferences and symposia. His research work resulted in the development of a number of models including subsidence prediction and mine pillar design. Dr. Khair's primary objective is the education of young men and women in the field of Mining Engineering.

Dr. Khair has developed state-of-the-art Ground Control and Rock Mechanics Laboratories in the Mineral Resources building, consisting of specimen preparation, laboratory and field instrumentation, structural testing and coal/rock cutting facilities. He has acquired approximately half a million dollars worth of equipment which enhanced the education of the students and make possible valuable research opportunities.

Dr. Khair has published more than 100 scholarly works in journals and symposia hearing, 24 reports, and edited five national and international proceedings, and received numerous awards (Details are in his website).
